Choosing Lamps

High Performance Lamps take indoor horticulture to the next level
By using only the highest quality components and spectral sciences, the industry is now able to create lamps that can come very close to reproducing the color spectrums that chlorophyll is most responsive to. So, if you have a good enough understanding of the basic grow light, let's take a look at what's new in lamps. At a recent industry show, I was introduced to Hortilux's new BLUE burning metal halide lamp. It rendered colors very nicely, which means your skin doesn't look gangrenous when illuminated by this lamp unlike regular Metal Halide lamps. But more importantly, the vegetative growth this lamp produces is very compact and stocky which is exactly the type of growth the indoor gardener seeks. Much the contrary to plants grown under standard HPS and standard MH bulbs.

To the right is the PAR chart of a Hortilux High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lamp. Notice the strong peaks around 550-600nM which are great for stimulating reproductive growth in flowers and fruit. However, their lack of PAR in the blue spectrum means that they don't lend themselves well for producing short and stocky vegetative growth. For this, a Metal Halide is your best bet.

This chart shows the PAR spectrum of the Hortilux "Blue" MH bulb which you can see does an incredible job of blending both MH and HPS color spectrums across the PAR chart. If you are looking for a single bulb that will maximize your garden's growth and keep your plants short and stocky, this bulb is a great choice.

pH Test Kits are perfect for monitoring pH. Simply fill the test vial with water, add a few drops of indicator and compare the resulting color with chart. For larger gardens, we sell waterproof digital pH meters. You'll also need pH Down and pH Up products to raise and lower your garden's pH.
